The results of a new study into construction safety should not really come as a surprise to Houston workplace accident lawyers, who are familiar with the risks that construction workers face every day on the job. The study finds that career construction workers, or those who have made this profession their lifelong career, are at a much higher risk of workplace fatalities and injuries.
These workers have a risk of being injured or suffering an occupational illness at least once, if not more, during their time in the industry. These workers also have a much higher risk of being killed in the workplace.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Center for Construction Research and Training. According to the data, a construction worker who has been in the industry for about forty-five years has a 75% chance of experiencing a serious or debilitating injury. A construction worker like this also faces a 1 in 200 chance of being killed on the job.
The risk of being killed or suffering a fatal injury on the job increases for professional construction workers who also happen to be Hispanic. These workers have a 20% higher chance of being killed or, suffering an on-the-job injury in the construction industry.
Construction workers who have been in the industry for many years also suffer a much higher risk of suffering an occupational illness. According to the data, a person who begins work in the industry at the age of 20 has a 50% higher chance of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease over his lifetime. He also has an 11% chance of developing dust-related parenchymal chest x-ray changes.
