An explosion at a Kansas grain elevator that killed six workers last month has brought into sharp focus the safety measures at grain handling facilities in Texas and nationwide. The explosion occurred at the Bartlett Grain Co. located about 50 miles northwest of Kansas City.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has begun an investigation into the Kansas grain elevator explosion. The investigation is expected to take six months to complete, and we will then have answers as to what exactly went wrong here. However, according to the Associated Press, the agency had not inspected the elevator since the company purchased it five years ago.
Across the country, there are an estimated 10,000 commercial grain elevators and grain handling operations. These are located mainly in Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois and Minnesota. Safety measures at these grain operations have increased since the late 70s, when a series of explosions killed at least fifty workers. These grain handling facilities have become safer over the years, and the risk of explosions and accidents has been reduced. However as the Kansas explosion shows, employers could do more to protect workers.
All it takes is a single spark to trigger a serious explosion at a grain facility. A grain facility can be filled with grain dust which floats around the facility, creating a combustible environment.
