Three motorcyclists were killed and three others were injured in separate accidents that took place during the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston over the weekend.
In the first accident that occurred on Friday afternoon, a Houston man suffered serious injuries when his motorcycle broadsided a school bus. He remains in a critical condition. In the second accident, a male and female motorcyclist died when the Harley Davidson they were riding on crashed on Interstate 45 in Galveston. According to witnesses, the motorcycle was traveling at high speeds, when the driver lost control. Both the male and female motorcyclist died at the scene. Neither of them was wearing a helmet.
In the third accident, a nineteen-year-old motorcyclist was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck. Two other motorcyclists were injured in separate accidents. More than 500,000 motorcyclists participated in the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston.
Motorcyclists are at a much greater risk of being killed or seriously injured in accidents than occupants of other vehicles. A motorcyclist or motorcycle rider has little protection in the event of an accident, and even helmets may not completely guarantee protection against a serious or fatal brain injury.
