New Safety Device Could Prevent Approximately 81% of Car Accidents

At a recent technology conference in Orlando, General Motors unveiled an in- development safety device that any Houston car accident lawyer would find very intriguing. The company believes that this technology can prevent as many as 81% of all car accidents.

The company demonstrated the device at the Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress in Orlando. The device relies on ITS technology, to enable communication between cars, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians within a quarter-mile range. The devices can be used to communicate with other vehicles to avoid accidents.

The device can transmit information about your vehicle to similar devices in other cars in the neighborhood. Data about construction zones and stopped traffic can be transmitted from your car to cars around you. You will be alerted about the position of another car that is nearing yours at an intersection, before you even see the car. The technology can be downloaded into a smart phone, and can alert motorists to pedestrians and bicyclists in the neighborhood, thereby averting collations. With the device, drivers would be made aware of an accident threat at least a quarter-mile ahead.

According to General Motors, these technologies can also be retrofitted into existing vehicles. That’s not just encouraging, but also necessary, because the effectiveness of the system depends on a large number of cars being equipped with the devices.
