Parents in Houston and around Texas will soon begin poring through shopping lists, looking for the perfect gift for little ones. Safety obviously will be a priority for these buyers. The good news is that the number of recalls involving toys in the United States is down. The bad news is that last year, more than 181,000 children were taken to hospital emergency rooms with a toy-related injury.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2010, 181,500 children were injured in toy-related accidents, and had to be taken to hospital ERs. The children were below 15 years of age. In 2010, seventeen children below the age of 15 died from toy-related injuries. Almost half of these were related to small rubber balls and balloons, products that the CPSC finds difficult to regulate. There was an increase in the number of fatalities involving children below the age of 15 last year. In 2009, the number of fatalities was 15.
Houston defective products lawyers will not deny that the toys you buy for your children in 2011 will be much safer and subjected to stricter safety standards than the toys you bought back in 2008. That year, congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, and this has led to stronger lead content and lead paint limits standards, restrictions on the use of phthalates in children’s toys and a number of other restrictions aimed at keeping children safe from defective toys. However, parents still need to check up product recall information on the CPSC website before buying any toys.
