Johnson & Johnson Will Phase out Carcinogenic Chemical from Products



Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will phase out a potentially carcinogenic chemical from hundreds of its baby products.

According to the company, it will phase out formaldehyde preservatives in shampoos and other children’s products over two years.  There have been a number of complaints about the presence of formaldehyde in Johnson’s baby shampoo.  This is a known carcinogenic that has also recently been linked to a hair styling product.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has warned about the risk of formaldehyde poisoning in hair salon workers who work with Brazilian Blowout hair straightening products.

Formaldehyde can trigger some kind kinds of cancers.  It has also been linked to certain forms of allergies.  It is a commonly used preservative in cosmetic products.  In 2009, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics first raised concerns about the presence of formaldehyde in hundreds of Johnson & Johnson children’s products.  Johnson & Johnson has now assured consumers that it will soon begin a process of phasing out the formaldehyde products, although it does not believe that the amount of formaldehyde in its products poses any kind of risk to consumers.

The company also says that it plans to reduce the amount of 1, 4-dioxane contaminant that is found in many shampoos and products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.  Johnson & Johnson has been under severe pressure over the past few months, reeling under dozens of recalls of some of its most popular brands for safety concerns.
