Efforts to Develop in-Car Alcohol Detection Device Continue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has handed at least two contracts to develop an in-car alcohol detection device prototype.  The agency however, has strict criteria for any device that it will ultimately approve of for installation in vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is collaborating with manufacturers to develop an in- car alcohol detection device that will go beyond ignition interlock devices to prevent intoxicated motorists from driving.  Conventional ignition interlock devices of the kind that are required in many states for DUI offenses require a motorist to breathe into a breathalyzer device.  The device detects alcohol on the motorist’s breath, and if the amount of alcohol exceeds a set limit, the device shuts down the engine, preventing motorists from driving.

However, the Driver Alcohol Reduction System for Safety program is aimed at the development of a device that would be quick, reliable and virtually invisible.  The device would not require a motorist to breathe into a breathalyzer device.  The device would be unobtrusive, and would not inconvenience a sober motorist every time he wants to drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants a device that has all the above criteria and more.  The agency is looking for a device that would determine the amount of alcohol in a motorist within a third of a second.  The device must work consistently well in all types of situations, and must require no maintenance.  It must be able to tolerate variations in temperature, humidity, dust, and electromagnetic radiation.

Once the devices have been developed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will put these through the testing process.  Two contractors, a Tokyo-based company and a Swedish manufacturer are currently developing a breath-based and a touch-based device for testing.
