Texas Company Cited for Violations after Worker’s Electrocution Death

In June, an oil rig worker performing repair work on a rig near Ozona, Texas was killed in an electrocution accident.  The company that operated the rig, Ringo Drilling has now been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for several violations.

The agency has cited the company for several serious violations, including failure to provide training in avoiding electrical hazards, failure to protect workers from falls by failing to provide with guard rails, and failure to train them about the proper use of stepladders.  The company has been cited for four serious violations.

The agency has also cited the company for several repeat violations, including failure to protect workers from falls.  The agency is proposing penalties of $130,000.

Electrocution risks exist in every workplace.  However, these hazards can be minimized by the use of proper safeguards.  Many electrical injuries are caused by the use of unsafe electrical equipment or machinery.  In other cases, tools have exposed wiring or worn-out insulation that poses an electrocution risk to workers.  Failure to provide proper grounding for equipment and failing to provide safe electrical cables are also common causes of electrical injuries in the workplace.  Employers have a responsibility to provide workers with safe electrical tools and equipment to prevent electrical injuries.  Workers must not only be provided safe tools, but must also be trained to use these properly to avoid injuries.
