CPSC Issues Warning against Using Bumbo Baby Seats on Elevated Surfaces

In spite of earlier warnings as well as recalls by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the manufacturer of Bumbo Baby Seats, too many parents continue to use these seats on elevated surfaces.  The result is very often a nasty fall accident.

Several infants have fallen off the elevated baby seats, and suffered serious head injuries, like skull fractures.  Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bumbo International are again advising parents not to use the baby seats on elevated surfaces.  Bumbo International is warning that infants may have a high risk of falling, when they lean forward from the baby seat, or arch backward.

The warning comes because of continued reports of injuries involving children who fell from the baby seats which had been placed on tables, countertops, chairs and other elevated surfaces.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, it is aware of at least 45 incidents in which infants fell off the seats, while these had been placed on an elevated surface.  The incident occurred after a recall announced in October 2007.

At the time of the 2007 recall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission was aware of at least 20 fall accidents involving the baby seats.  At least three of these incidents caused skull fractures to the infants.  The falls involved infants who were between three and ten months old.
