Researchers Find Probiotics Improve Outcomes for Patients with Brain Injury

A course of probiotics – microorganisms that have proven health benefits – administered to a patient with a brain injury can help improve patient outcomes.  That’s according to a new study conducted at the North Sichuan College Hospital in China.

Persons who suffer from a brain injury are at a high risk for inflammation because the brain releases glucocorticoids in reaction to the injury.  This inflammation of the brain affects a person’s ability to fight off infections after an injury.

The researchers experimented with a group of 52 patients with traumatic brain injury.  These patients had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, and had a Glasgow Coma scale rating of between 6 and 8.  26 patients in the study were in the control group, while 26 patients were administered the additional therapy, consisting of 109 probiotics.  The persons were administered the probiotics every day for a period of 21 days.

At the end, researchers found that the persons who had been on the probiotic therapy had a lower risk of infections, and spent much lesser time in the intensive care unit, compared to those persons who had not received the additional probiotics.

Probiotics have also been linked to a lower risk of ventilated-associated pneumonia in critically ill patients in intensive care units.  Those risks were reduced by more than 50% when probiotics were given to patients.
