Need to Focus on DUI Involving Women

As a Houston car accident lawyer, I’m very familiar with the drunk driving problem in the Houston region and around Texas.  These high DUI rates are the result of poor laws against intoxicated driving, lack of enforcement, lack of sobriety checkpoints and a number of other reasons.  Men constitute the majority of drunk driving arrests in Texas as around the country.  However, women are narrowing this gap.

According to research by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, the number of women arrested for drunk driving around the country increased by 36% over the last decade.  Not only are more women driving under the influence now, but more of those women are also binge drinking.  The amount of binge drinking young women increased by about 30% over a 3-decade period.

As more and more women compete successfully with men for employment and education opportunities, it is to be expected that the number of women also indulging in potentially reckless driving practices, like driving under the influence, will increase.  However, sociologists believe that there’s more to this increase in DUI arrests than a growing number of financially independent female drivers.  Many female drunk drivers in the United States are mothers – primary caregivers who hold jobs and are well-educated.  These women may find themselves overwhelmed by the stresses of parenting, and may begin having a few drinks at a time to take the edge of their stresses.  Unfortunately, counselors now find more and more women whose drinking, which began with a few harmless glasses of wine, slowly ballooned out of proportion.
