Tis the season to be jolly, but more and more people seem to be neglecting safety when they’re caught up in the spirit of the holidays. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there has been an increase in the number of people being taken to emergency rooms after suffering injuries while decorating trees and homes for the holidays.
There has been a rise in the number of injuries occurring in falls from ladders while stringing lights, cuts, wounds and lacerations from broken glass ornaments and other decorating-related injuries. More than 30,000 people were injured in these activities, and had to be rushed to emergency rooms during November and December of 2010. That was an increase from 10,000 people injured in 2007 and 12,000 people injured in 2008 and 2009.
Additionally, tree fires are also far more common than people know. Between 2006 and 2008, Christmas tree-related fires resulted in 4 deaths, and caused approximately $18 million in property damage.
One of the most common mistakes that people make is buying an inflammable tree. Look for a ‘fire resistant’ label before you buy an artificial tree. If you’re buying a live tree, avoid buying one that has needles falling off branches. Also don’t skimp on safe writing. Only buy lighting that has been manufactured by a reputed manufacturer. Don’t use cracked or broken lights, or lights that have exposed wiring. Don’t place candles next to trees, or inflammable materials and put them out before going to bed.
