Mead Johnson Nutrition Company, the manufacturer of Enfamil Premium Newborn formula insists that the product is completely safe, and has been properly tested, even as retailers around the country rushed to pull the formula from their shelves.
Last week, a 10-day-old boy in Missouri died after he contracted a deadly bacterial infection. He had been fed the Enfamil Newborn formula which his parents had purchased at a Wal-Mart in Missouri. Wal-Mart reacted immediately by pulling the product from more than 3,000 stores nationwide. Now, other retailers including Safeway and Walgreens say that they will pull the Enfamil Newborn formula from the same lot as the one that was given to the victim, from their shelves.
The infection that the boy contracted was caused by a rare bacteria called Cronobacter sakazakii. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this particular bacteria causes about 4 to 6 people to be sickened every year. Meanwhile, federal health agencies are also investigating another infection that has been reported out of Illinois. In that case, another infant child contracted the same bacterial infection after consuming powdered milk. However, in that case, the child has recovered, and investigators are looking at whether the child was given powdered milk from the same lot as the one given to the Missouri victim.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is leading the investigation into these infections. Infants may be at grave risk when they develop an infection caused by the Cronobacter sakazakii. This infection is fatal in about 40% of the cases, and those who survive may be left with lifelong neurological problems.
