Persons who have suffered even a moderate a brain injury can expect long-term health consequences after the injury. A new study finds that these persons may also be at a high risk of committing violent criminal crimes, compared to people who have not suffered a brain injury.
The researchers focused on persons who had suffered a traumatic brain injury and persons who had epilepsy across Sweden between 1970 and 2009. In their analysis, the researchers found that 8.8% of persons who had a traumatic brain injury were likely to also be convicted of a violent crime, like homicide and rape. In comparison, in the general population with no history of brain injury, the risk of the person committing a violent crime was just 3%. However, the researchers found no link between a history of epilepsy and a high incidence of violent crime.
Altogether, the researchers focused on more than 22,000 patients with brain injury. Houston brain injury lawyers believe that this is the most exhaustive study on the link between brain injury and violent crime. Studies into the link between TBI and crime have been conducted earlier, but have used smaller sections of population.
This study seems to conclusively prove an association between a person’s brain injury and the risk of being involved in a possible violent criminal act in the future. The researchers suggest that current guidelines for brain injury victims include assessment of possible risk for violent criminal acts.
