According to a study that has just been published in the Journal Neurorology, the brain of a person who has suffered an arm injury or has lost his arm, begins to adapt to the circumstances, as quickly as within 2 weeks after the injury. It’s why persons, who suffer an arm or hand fracture or any other injury that prevents them from using their arm or hand, are quickly able to learn how to perform routine tasks using their uninjured arm.
According to researchers, certain areas of the brain that are needed to compensate for the injury begin to increase in size after the injury. Researchers based their findings on a study of a small sample of 10 subjects. These persons were all right-handed, and had suffered a right arm injury. The subjects were monitored over 2 weeks. When the researchers investigated the volunteers’ ability to use their uninjured left hand 2 days after the injury and compared it with 2 weeks after the injury, they found that the right-hander could move the left hand fairly well and use it for certain activities.
Those results were confirmed by brain scans, the first of which was taken just 2 days after the injury and the second taken 2 weeks after the injury. The scans found an increase in the size of the brain area responsible for activities linked to the use of the left-hand, and a decrease in the size in the area of the brain responsible for the activity in the right hand.
These are intriguing results, and the researchers want to build further on these findings, by investigating whether the results can be used to develop therapies that benefit persons who have lost an arm in a workplace accident or auto accident.
