Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Pedestrians and bicyclists in the state of Texas may be at a much higher risk for accidents than elsewhere in the country.  A new report compares all 50 states and 51 of the biggest cities in the US, and ranks them on the basis of bicycling and walking levels.  The researchers focused not just on the frequency of bicycling and walking in the cities and states, but also the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, gauged by the number of accidents and fatalities involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Texas was ranked at the bottom of the list of states for bicycle and...

Spike in Pedestrian Accident Fatalities Is Worrying

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Even as traffic accident death rates last year dropped to record lows, the number of pedestrian accident fatalities increased.  Last year, there was a 4.2% increase in the number of people killed in pedestrian accidents, the first time that an increase has been recorded in 4 years. There was also an increase of 19% in the number of pedestrians injured to 70,000 last year.  The roads may be safer for motorists, but as Houston car accident lawyers can see from these statistics, they are not so for pedestrians at all. There are no explanations for this increase in pedestrian...

Hybrid Cars Safer for Motorists; But Not So Much for Pedestrians

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Hybrid vehicles are much safer for occupants than conventional non-hybrid conventional vehicles.  However, these vehicles also seem to be involved in more numbers of pedestrian accidents than conventional vehicles. According to a report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, hybrid vehicles protect their occupants in accidents much better than conventional vehicles do.  These vehicles pack greater mass than conventional non-hybrid vehicle, and therefore, can absorb impact better.  In fact, these vehicles offer approximately 25% more protection than non-hybrid conventional vehicles. That's the good news.  The bad news is that these vehicles are also involved in more pedestrian...

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Although 9 out of 10 parents say that their children go trick-or-treating on Halloween, one in ten does not bother to discuss Halloween safety tips with their children.  A new study by Safe Kids USA also finds that many parents make critical Halloween safety mistakes, including making their children wear cumbersome costumes with masks, and allowing children to go out trick-or-treating unsupervised. A new study by Safe Kids USA titled Halloween Safety: A National Survey of Parents Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors finds that while Halloween is one of the most eagerly-awaited holidays in the country, there are still...

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

This week, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association released new pedestrian accident death estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2009, of pedestrians were killed in accidents in Texas. Thursday, October 28th, 2010

A couple of nights before Halloween is the right time to bring attention to the fact that Halloween is the deadliest time for children between the age of five and 14 in the United States.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more children of this age group are injured during Halloween than during any other night of the year.  In fact, more than 4,000 child pedestrians are injured every year during this holiday. Teen Motorist Won’t Be Charged in Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Brazos County

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Drowsy driving kills an unaccounted number of people every year. The reason for that is that there is no well-established system for reporting drowsy driving accidents. No state except New Jersey has laws against driving in a drowsy state. Drowsy driving has been blamed for an accident in Brazos County in January that killed two people. The teen motorist in that accident apparently fell asleep at the wheel. 18-year-old Trevor Moore was driving an SUV-in January when he struck two men. The two victims died in the accident. According to Brazos County police, there were no indications that Moore was driving...
