Women Who Live near High Benzene Areas May Be at Risk of Having Babies with Birth Defects

Monday, November 1st, 2010

It’s not a surprise to benzene exposure lawyers that people who live in areas where there's a high concentration of benzene in the environment, have a higher risk of developing diseases like cancer.  However, a new study shows that women, who live in these areas, may also be at a higher risk of having babies with a neurological defect. The study was conducted by researchers from the University Of Texas School of Public Health and the Texas Department of Public Safety.  The findings of the study have been published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.  This is believed...

Two Workers Suffer Burn Injuries at BPs Texas City Refinery

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Several news sources are reporting that two workers at BPs Texas City refinery have suffered serious burn injuries.  According to news reports, the men were working at one of the refineries crude units when they were burned by steam. There isn't a lot of information available about how the accident occurred, or what unit the men were working on.  The injuries were serious enough for the workers to be taken to a hospital.  According to some news reports, at least one worker is reported to have suffered 30% burns on his body.  He has been shifted to a Galveston area...

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

I'm pleased to announce that our Houston-based injury law firm has filed a mass injury lawsuit against BP over benzene exposure from a leak at the company's Texas City refinery earlier this year. The lawsuit was filed in Galveston, Texas federal court, and we're representing 120 persons who suffered exposure to benzene during the leak from the refinery.  The leak occurred between April 6 and May 16, 2010.  The persons included in the lawsuit live and work near the Texas City refinery. The leak of 538,000 pounds of chemicals, including 17,000 pounds of benzene occurred during...

BP Letter Denies Health Impact of Texas City Refinery Benzene Leak

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Not surprisingly to benzene exposure lawyers, BP has denied that the leak of tens of thousands of pounds of contaminants, including benzene, from a Texas City refinery caused any adverse health impacts in the local population.  That statement should definitely assuage any concerns that Texas City residents or benzene exposure attorneys have. BPs Texas City refinery Business Unit leader Keith Casey has sent a letter to the mayor of Texas City, assuring him that BP’s scientific monitors did not indicate any health impact from the refinery leak on the local community.  BP’s letter also...

BP to Pay $50.6 Million in Penalties for Texas City Refinery Safety Violations

Friday, August 13th, 2010

It hasn't been the best year for BP.  This week, the company agreed to pay the single largest penalty in OSHA history for safety violations. BP agreed to pay the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about $50.6 million in penalties for safety violations at its Texas City refinery.  The fines relate to an explosion at the refinery in 2005 that killed 15 workers.  BP has also agreed to invest approximately $500 million in upgrading safety programs at the Texas City refinery. OSHA investigations had revealed that the Texas City refinery occurred because a piece of equipment filled with inflammable...

Benzene’s Long Term Effects Should Concern Texas City Residents

Monday, August 9th, 2010

On April 6, an ultracracker unit at BP’s Texas City refinery suffered a compromised seal, which led to the company having to flare gases.  Over the next 40 days, as the company worked to fix the ultracracker unit, approximately 530,000 pounds of pollutants were released into the Texas City air.  This included 17,000 pounds of benzene, a known carcinogen. BP never informed the public about this leak that was spread out over 40 days.   It did report to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality the next day, and submitted a final incident report to regulators on 4 June.  That was...
