Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Three motorcyclists were killed and three others were injured in separate accidents that took place during the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston over the weekend. In the first accident that occurred on Friday afternoon, a Houston man suffered serious injuries when his motorcycle broadsided a school bus.  He remains in a critical condition.  In the second accident, a male and female motorcyclist died when the Harley Davidson they were riding on crashed on Interstate 45 in Galveston.  According to witnesses, the motorcycle was traveling at high speeds, when the driver lost control.  Both the male and female motorcyclist died...

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Risk Is 37% Lower with Antilock Brakes

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

When motorcycles are equipped with antilock braking systems, motorcyclists have a 37% lower chance of being involved in a fatal accident, than when these vehicles are not equipped with these devices.  Additionally, motorcyclists whose vehicles come with antilock braking systems are involved in fewer accident claims. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is using this data to impress on motorcyclists the need to ride motorcycles that come with antilock braking systems.  These devices are not mandatory in all motorcycles, and the Insurance Institute has been pushing for federal legislation that would mandate such devices in all motorcycles. Antilock braking systems can...

MSF Kicks off Motorcycle Crash Causation Study

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has begun its naturalistic study of motorcycle accident causes, by announcing that the first motorcyclist with recording equipment installed in the motorcycle is already off on a year-long trial. The study will involve 100 motorcycle riders, who will have a number of recording gadgets installed in their motorcycles.  The point is to record the motorcyclist’s riding behavior as he rides everyday in normal conditions.  The cameras will also track what happens during and just before an accident.  Footage from the seconds before an accident are extremely important, because these can provide vital clues about how the...

Motorcycle Manufacturers Need to Gear up Toward Safety

Friday, July 1st, 2011

The increase in safety technologies in automobiles is one of the reasons why there has been a continuing drop in auto accident fatalities in the United States.  Unfortunately, Houston motorcycle accident attorneys cannot say the same thing about motorcycles.  Motorcycles today are faster, sleeker and more powerful than in the past, but not necessarily safer.  The motorcycle industry has failed to add powerful safety technologies that would reduce the number of motorcycle accidents and save lives every year. This is part of the reason why motorcycle accident fatalities have remained high over the past few decades.  There hasn't...

Motorcycle Accident Fatalities in Texas at Record Highs

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

This is the sort of news that I hate to share, but as a Houston motorcycle accident lawyer, it is important for me to bring attention to the increase in motorcycle accident deaths in Texas.  According to the Texas Department of Transportation, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of the total number of traffic deaths in Texas in 2009. Overall, in 2009, there were 434 motorcycle accident fatalities.  More than 5,800 motorcyclists were injured in accidents that year.  The final statistics of 2010 are not yet in. Most motorcycle accidents occur at intersections, or when a motorcycle is changing lanes.  It's...

Motorcycle Accident Fatalities Could Spike over Next Few Years

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

The Governors’ Highway Safety Association has troubling news for Houston motorcycle accident attorneys.  According to the agency's data, motorcycle accident fatalities across the country have dropped by 2.4% in 2010.  However, the drop is too insignificant to be important, and much of the decline was recorded during a time when there were fewer motorcycles on the country's roads. The report concludes that unless states take immediate steps to protect motorcyclists, we could be seeing another spike in motorcycle accident fatalities over the next few years.  In 2009, motorcycle accident fatalities had recorded an 11-year drop of 16% in...

Study: Motorcycle Helmets Help Prevent Spine Injuries

Friday, February 18th, 2011

According to a new study, motorcycle riders who wear helmets at the time of an accident are approximately 22% less likely to suffer cervical spine injuries. The study goes against previously held beliefs that wearing helmets can actually increase a person's risk of suffering a neck or cervical spine injury during an accident. That motorcycle helmets help prevent brain injury during a collision, is a fact that has been known to Houston motorcycle accident lawyers and motorcyclists. This study however proves that helmets also prevent other debilitating injuries, like cervical spine engines. The study conducted by researchers at...

Annual NTSB Wish List Focuses on Motorcycle Safety

Friday, November 19th, 2010

The National Transportation Safety Board has just released its annual “Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety” for 2010. This is a list of recommendations that the federal agency issues every year to states. This year, recreational boating safety has been dropped due to a decline in fatal boating accidents last year. Taking the place of recreational boating safety recommendations are calls for making motorcycle helmet mandatory for motorcyclists. The NTSB says that mandating motorcycle helmets will prevent the large number of fatalities that occur every year in motorcycle crashes.  In Texas, motorcyclists above the age of 21 are exempted...

Police are looking for the driver of a white pickup truck they blame for a fatal motorcycle accident that killed a Texas couple last week. The driver left the scene of the accident. The driver had stopped the white pickup truck in the middle of the Central Expressway without the hazard lights on. The truck was hit by a car, and the couple on a motorcycle was not able to avoid hitting the car. They sustained serious injuries in the accident. While the wife died at the scene, her husband was rushed to the hospital where he was...
