FDA Warns of Injuries from Drug Mix-up
Saturday, December 31st, 2011
The Food and Drug Administration is warning health-care workers of the very real risk of errors while using two separate health-care products that have similar sounding names. The first product is a wart remover, and the other is an eye salve.
The wart removal product is called Durasal, and has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The eye salve cream is called Durezol and has received FDA approval. The agency is aware of at least one incident in which a pharmacist mixed up the 2 drugs. The patient was given the wrong drug, and suffered serious injuries...
Sound Physical and Mental Health May Not Prevent Senior Driver Errors, Accidents
Sunday, May 29th, 2011
A study conducted by researchers at Australian National University indicates that even healthy senior drivers who do not have dementia and drive frequently, may be at risk of driving errors. These risks increase with the age of the driver.
The researchers study analyzed 266 drivers between the age of 70 and 88. The subjects were put through a 12-mile driving test. These were all healthy seniors who lived independently, had never shown any signs of dementia, and drove at least once a week. Their driving skills were measured by a driving instructor and an occupational therapist in the car. The...
FDA Asks Hip Implant Makers to Provide Blood Poisoning Data
Friday, May 13th, 2011
Blood poisoning from metal ions released by metal-on-metal hip implants been one of the complications associated with the use of these implants. Several patients who have been implanted with these implants have reported levels of metals in their blood that far exceeded normal levels. But the Food and Drug Administration is now asking manufacturers of these hip implants to study whether these hip implants release metal ions, and the possible health effects on the person.
The manufacturers include 20 of the biggest companies in the industry, like Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer and Stryker. The agency has written to these manufacturers, asking...
FMCSA Proposes New Bus Safety Rules to Prevent Accidents
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced new rules aimed at reducing the risk of injuries and fatalities to bus passengers. As a Houston bus accident attorney, I believe Texas desperately needs stronger bus safety laws, because of the several serious and fatal accidents that have occurred here recently.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new rules will strengthen standards for commercial driver’s licenses. Under the new rules, any person who wants to obtain a commercial driver’s license must first obtain a commercial driver's learner’s permit. The rule also creates a national standard for commercial driver’s licensing...
Can Your Car Safety Seat Really Protect Your Child from Injuries?
Sunday, May 8th, 2011
That's the question parents and Houston product liability attorneys will be asking after a recent study which revealed that most children are able to unfasten their car safety seat belts, increasing the risk of injuries in an accident.
The researchers mailed more than 500 surveys to pediatric offices around Connecticut. The study found that children, even those at one year of age, can easily unbuckle their seat belts. The results also found that more than 40% of children, who were able to unbuckle the restraints of their car safety seat, did so while the car was in motion. ...
Watch Out for Drunk Drivers This New Year’s
Thursday, December 30th, 2010
Over the past year, about one in every 10 drivers drove under the influence of alcohol. That is in spite of the fact that 90% of all drivers are aware of the accident hazards of drunk driving. Those scary facts come from a survey conducted by the American Automobile Association, and released just in time to coincide with the deadly New Year’s holiday.
As a Houston car accident lawyer, I fear that this New Year's Eve holiday will see more drunk driving accidents. The holiday this year falls on a Saturday, and the last time we had a New...
New Crib Safety Guidelines in the Pipeline
Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted 5-2 to implement safer standards for cribs. That decision by the agency comes because of numerous crib recalls over the past year that were linked to several injuries and fatalities. Most of these adverse incidents were linked to drop side cribs.
What the agency has recommended are just proposed guidelines, and there must be a final vote before the guidelines are approved. However, once these guidelines are approved-as Houston product liability lawyers believe they will be-parents can expect a much safer environment for their children than the current clip designs...
Galveston Texting Ban to Prevent Auto Accidents
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010
This week, the city of Galveston passed a rule that accident lawyers in Houston have been very supportive of. The City made it harder for motorists to place their lives and others’ safety at risk of an auto accident.
A new ban on texting while driving went into force this Wednesday. Under the new rules, drivers caught sending or reading text messages while driving may be ticketed up to $500. After Galveston, it could be Missouri City. This week, the city council there approved an ordinance that would ban texting and emailing while driving. The ordinance must be...
