Federal Agency Sets New Safety Standards for Toddler Beds

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has come out with a new mandated set of toddler bed safety standards. The new rules are part of the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which ordered the Consumer Product Safety Commission to set standards for cribs, beds and other children's products.

It’s official. Drop side cribs, which have been extremely popular in the US, have now officially been banned from the market place. The Consumer Product Safety Commission last week announced a complete ban on the manufacture, distribution, sale and importation of these cribs.

New Crib Safety Guidelines in the Pipeline

Last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted 5-2 to implement safer standards for cribs. That decision by the agency comes because of numerous crib recalls over the past year that were linked to several injuries and fatalities. Most of these adverse incidents were linked to drop side cribs.
What the agency has recommended are just proposed guidelines, and there must be a final vote before the guidelines are approved.
