Experiments with Blood Test Diagnosis Offer New Hope for Brain Injury Treatment

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic are working on developing a test to diagnose brain injury.  The test will be able to detect specific amounts of a protein which is leaked after an injury.  This would make detecting a brain injury much quicker, more convenient, and less expensive. Typically, a person with a brain injury needs to undergo a computed tomography, or CT scan to diagnose the injury.  These scans are not only expensive, but may also miss many of the minor signs of an injury.  For instance, bleeding in the brain after an injury may not appear...

Traumatic Brain Injury Can Amplify Dementia Risk

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

A new analysis of brain injuries in veterans has found that a traumatic brain injury can increase the risk of developing dementia in the future.  The study raises concerns about the increased mental health issues facing people who have suffered a brain injury. According to the study, veterans who suffer even a mild brain injury, like a concussion had an increased risk of developing dementia.  The researchers found that about 15% of people, who had suffered a brain injury, had an increased risk of developing dementia.  In comparison, only 7% of people with TBI had the risk of dementia. There have...

High-Incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury among Prisoners

Monday, June 6th, 2011

As a Houston brain injury attorney, I found this report fascinating reading.  The report titled Traumatic Brain Injury among Prisoners underscores the high incidence of traumatic brain injury in the prison population in the United States, and points to some possible reasons for this. According to the report, approximately 25% to 87% of inmates in American prisons have a history of brain injury, compared to just 8% of the general non-incarcerated population.  Persons seem to have a much higher risk of suffering traumatic brain injury in prison. Most of these injuries are caused by assaults in prison.  Auto...

Diet Can Help Treat Brain Injury

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Research commissioned by the US military has found that a diet rich in calories and proteins after a traumatic brain injury, can speed up the process of recovery. The study was conducted by the Institute of Medicine, and involved an analysis of previous studies conducted into the use of nutrition to treat brain injury.  The results have been very interesting to Houston brain injury lawyers.  The researchers found from the studies that a combination of calories and proteins administered to patients within 24 hours of a traumatic brain injury can help improve the chances of survival of the...

New Research Suggests Antidepressant Therapy Can Help Treat Brain Injury

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Patients with a brain injury often find themselves suffering symptoms of depression, and are usually prescribed antidepressants.  However, a new study seems to indicate that the use of antidepressants in such patients may not only help them recover from the brain injury, but may also actually help heal the injury. The researchers induced traumatic brain injury in mice, and treated some of them with the antidepressant, ipiramine.  After four weeks, they found that the mice that had received the antidepressant therapy had about 70% more numbers of neutrons in their brains than the mice who did not benefit from the...

Study Shows Beneficial Effects of Acupressure on Brain Injury

Friday, March 4th, 2011

As a Houston brain injury lawyer, I frequently monitor developments in the field of brain injury treatment and therapy.  A new study indicates that the use of acupressure treatment on a person with a mild traumatic brain injury could have some benefits. Acupressure is an ancient form of healing that involves the use of the fingertips to apply specific pressure to certain areas of the body.  It is used to stimulate the body's natural healing properties.  The study was conducted by researchers at the University Of Colorado.  The special treatment that was used here, called jin...

Study Illustrates Risks, Benefits of Surgery on Elderly Patients with Brain Injury

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Houston brain injury lawyers have seen that brain surgery performed on patients who have suffered a brain injury, can improve prognosis for such patients. However, the picture is a little more muddied when you’re talking about elderly patients. A new study into the impact of brain surgery on elderly patients shows that approximately one third of senior citizens, who undergo a cranial operation, died in the hospital, while half died within a year after the injury. Not all is bad news, however. Long-term follow-up of these patients over a period of 42 months shows that out of the...

Devastating Economic Toll of Traumatic Brain Injury in Texas

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

It’s hard to put a monetary figure on the kind of suffering a person goes through after he has suffered a traumatic brain injury.  A person with TBI can expect extended hospitalization and therapy before he can go home.  Once he reaches home, he may find that his struggles have just begun.  The process of relearning activities that were second nature before the injury, is exhausting.  Even more excruciating is the process of regaining one's sense of confidence and self worth.  Like I said at the beginning of this post, it's hard to put a monetary figure on all...
